Bengaluru and Vancouver airports sign pact to study direct flights
Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport and Vancouver International have signed an agreement to explore direct air connectivity between the two cities.
Read-back
- Bengaluru and Vancouver airports signed a pact to explore direct air connectivity.
- No airline, aircraft, launch date or frequency has been announced.
- The two cities currently have no non-stop link.
- The agreement opens a joint exploration phase between the two hub operators.

Bengaluru and Vancouver airports have signed a pact to explore direct air connectivity between the two cities. The agreement commits the two hub operators to joint work on a possible non-stop service. No airline, aircraft type, launch date or frequency has been named at this stage.
The signing pairs Kempegowda International Airport, the main gateway serving India's technology capital in Karnataka, with Vancouver International Airport, the primary transpacific hub on Canada's west coast. Both airports act as connecting points: Bengaluru feeds domestic Indian traffic and Gulf and Southeast Asia routes, while Vancouver concentrates Asian–North American flows.
What does such a pact actually change?
An airport-to-airport memorandum of understanding is an exploratory instrument, not a route announcement. It allows the two operators to share market data, assess passenger demand and cargo potential, and jointly approach carriers that might operate the link. Airlines, not airports, decide whether a route flies.
For a non-stop to materialise, several pieces must fall into place:
- an airline must see sufficient origin-and-destination demand plus connecting feed at both ends;
- the aircraft used must cover the distance with a viable payload;
- bilateral air service rights between India and Canada must permit the city pair and capacity proposed;
- slots, terminal capacity and timing must support connections at both hubs.
The pact therefore signals intent at the infrastructure level. It does not commit any operator to a schedule.
Why this city pair attracts attention
Bengaluru sits at the centre of India's technology services industry, generating steady business traffic to North America. Vancouver offers Canadian west-coast access and onward connections through its alliance carriers. The two cities currently lack a direct link, so passengers connect through intermediate hubs such as Delhi, London, Frankfurt, Singapore or US gateways.
A non-stop would shorten journey times materially for that connecting traffic and could shift some of it onto the new city pair. Airports benefit when they capture long-haul origin-and-destination passengers rather than losing them to rival hubs, which is a core reason hub operators sign such agreements.
The economics remain the open question. Very long-haul routes carry high fuel and aircraft-utilisation costs, and carriers weigh a new city pair against alternative uses of the same aircraft. The pact's exploration phase is where that case gets built or dropped.
What comes next
Under agreements of this type, the airports typically spend the following months quantifying demand in both directions, surveying airlines and coordinating with their governments on traffic rights. A decision on whether a carrier commits to the route would follow only if that analysis supports it.
For now, the pact establishes the framework. Whether a Bengaluru–Vancouver non-stop moves from study to schedule depends on the demand case the two airports can now assemble together.
